Mantra Recommendation, Mantra Siddhi, Mantra Shakti

The Universe emerged from the indestructible sound. It is the vibration of sound that has projected this universe. Thus universe is controlled by sound. Who ever controls this sound controls the universe. There is a definite thought formula for the sound with which the Cosmic Mind gets propitiated. This thought formula and the associated intonation are referred to as Mantra. This is the definition of Mantra. The mantra reveals the truth to those who meditate on it repeatedly. This repetition of the holy incantation of Vedic Mantra is called Japa (Sanskrit Mantra chanting). The definition of Japa according to Agni Purana runs thus:

The syllable ‘ja’ destroys the birth and death cycle end the syllable ‘pa’ destroys all the sins. That which destroys all the sins and puts an end to the birth–death cycle is Japa.

In order to propitiate a deity and attain Mantra Siddhi and Mantra Shakti, Mantra-Kriya (action in the form of worship, either external or internal), and Bhakthi (devotion) are essential. If a man chants a mantra without devotion, it becomes mechanical and the deity will not be pleased. Or else, if a man chants or meditates upon a mantra devotionally but offers neither external worship (with the knowledge of its esoteric meaning) and nor internal worship (such as sacrificing the ego or the burning materialistic desires etc) then also the results will not be complete. Combining devotion with worship is essential for pleasing the deity and getting desired results.

Broadly the Mantras can be classified into three types: Sattvika, Rajasika and Tamasika. Mantra chanting for realization of God are Sattvika mantras. Those chanted for worldly prosperity are the Rajasika Mantras. Tamasika Mantras are chanted in order to cast spells of black magic on others. Of these three types, Saatvika Mantras are the most sacred as they lead to final emancipation, the ultimate aim of all souls on earth. Sattvika mantras are also self correcting; you can master them by practicing them. Tamasika mantras produce opposite results and may prove to be dangerous if used incorrectly. They should never be studied/practiced by the individual without the ‘diksha’ (initiation) from a guru.

Mantra, Stotra and Kavacha are the three limbs of the Mantra-Devata, the deity that presides over a mantra. Vedic Mantra is the thought power couched in a few words given by a guru. Stotras are prayers of an individual to god to fulfill some of his specific desires or for general goodness. Kavacha is a mantra-armor used for protections. Kavachas are found in plenty in the great epics and Puranas of India. Knowledge and disciplined practice of the Mantra Shastras helps us to reach our goals in life.

Before initiation, it is important to ascertain whether the Mantra is Sva-kula or A-kula, that is whether the Mantra is suitable to the individual or not. Kulatnava Tantra and Tantrasara provide us with the Rnidhani Chakra, which can be used to determine if the Mantra is in the position of a Rni(Debtor) or Dhani(Creditor) to the native. The former is acceptable. Computations are made in Siddhasiddha Chakras as to in which House or Chakra the first letter of the name of the worshipper and the first letter of the Mantra respectively fall. Mantra which falls within a certain houses is called Siddha and that on the next House Sadhya and on the next House Susadhyaari. Siddha and Susadhya Mantras are easy to accomplish and favorable to the native. Iri Mantras are inimical and will prove disastrous to the native. Sadhya mantras on the other hand are favorable but very difficult to accomplish for the native and may require intensive Sadhanas. These rules might not be applicable to certain Saatvika Mantras like the Gayathri Mantra which are always favorable. The Gayathri Mantra worship the supreme god, the source of all, opines Sage Yajnavalkya. Mantras can be masculine, feminine or neutral. The sex of the mantra changes with that of its presiding Devatha(deity). Sharadhatilaka states that mantras ending in Hum or Phat are masculine whereas those ending in Swaha are feminine. Neutral mantras are those ending in Namaha.
