Hanuman Puja, Hanuman Pooja for protection and Enemy Destruction

Hanuman is the monkey-god, and a character from The Ramayana. He is pictured as an erudite, highly cultured and refined person. He is strong as he is wise, and as devoted as he is strong and wise, a very rare combination. He is represented in two postures: When in the company of Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, he is shown as standing humbly at a distance or sitting devotedly at the feet of Sri Rama. In shrines especially erected for him, he strikes a heroic pose, usually with the mace in his left hand and carrying the Sanjivini Mountain in the right hand. The greatness of Hanuman is revealed by Valmiki through the mouths of every great character in Ramayana – Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana, Vali, Vibishana, Indrajit, Ravana and Bharatha. He received the admiration of one and all, of men and women and of friends and foes alike. After listening to Hanuman’s speech, Sri Rama himself remarks: “One who has not learned the Rigveda, one who hasn’t mastered the Yajurveda, and one who has not studied the Samaveda, cannot speak in such a chaste language. He seems to be a man of great elocution. His speech wins over my heart and completely delights my very soul”.

Hanuman is portrayed as the supporter of Dharma- the vehicle carrying the very Lord Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders. Though he performed great feats, he never thought that the achievements were his own. He is a character of complete self-effacement, a total surrender to the cause of his actions.

Today Hanuman has the status of an independent god. Hanuman as Vira Anjaneya is worshipped expensively. Anjaneya Worship (Hanuman Puja) is extremely efficacious, especially in Mantra and Yantra forms. Indians throughout the ages have laid a great emphasis on the control of senses – Indriya Nigraha – and the observance of celibacy – Brahmacharya and the fight for the cause of Dharma, devotion and service and above all, humility. There is no other creation in the whole field of Indian thought which combines all the lofty ideals India stands for, except Hanuman, who is designated as ‘Chiranjeevi’ – the ever living.
